Working with me

Whether you’re working with a freelance copywriter for the first time or outsource your copywriting regularly, it’s good to know what to expect. So here’s an overview of the process that helps me get to grips with the project and gives you peace of mind that you’re working with a professional freelance copywriter.

While it’s good to have a plan, life happens, and things change. So flexibility is a given. Sometimes we need to talk several times during a project, other times it works for everyone to just get on with it. There’ll be times when a written brief isn’t necessary and we talk it through. And occasionally there’s no time for a timeplan because your project is ridiculously urgent!

Exploratory phone chat

Email is super-useful but you can’t beat an actual conversation. It’s a chance for you to get to know me and for me to learn more about you, the organisation and the project.

Proposal

Once I understand the project, I prepare a comprehensive proposal which outlines the scope of the work, details my services, and gives you a cost. You’ll also get a copy of my terms and conditions – they’re fairly standard and designed to help us work together hitch-free.

The go-ahead

Commissioning me is as easy as sending me an email letting me know you’re happy with the quote and agree to the T&Cs.

Pre-commencement payment

Prior to starting the project, I ask clients to pay a commencement fee of 50% of the total cost. This secures the time in my schedule and confirms your commitment.

Timeplan

Based on your deadline and my availability, I prepare a timeplan and we agree it together so we know when to expect drafts, feedback, revisions and the final version. The dates are then locked into my schedule.

Briefing

To write copy that does the job I need to know the ins and outs. So I send you my briefing questionnaire designed to pull out everything I need to know about the project, organisation, objectives, audience, and more. I spot any gaps and we have a conversation to extract those golden nuggets.

Drafts, feedback and approvals

Every project includes two rounds of edits to make sure your copy is spot-on. Drafts are sent in a Word document and you give feedback directly in the document, using inline comments or over the phone – whichever suits you.

The finished product and final payment

Once copy is signed off, I send you a clean version, without notes and red pen, together with a final invoice.

Feedback

Happy with everything? If you are, and don’t mind others knowing, I ask you for a testimonial or LinkedIn recommendation. I make it quick and easy for you to do too.
